Grantee Perception Report

At the beginning of 2021, we conducted our fourth round of the Grantee Perception Report, an anonymous survey conducted by the Center for Effective Philanthropy (CEP). The survey allows us to see change over time and compare ourselves to more than 300 foundations nationwide. You can view the full survey results here.

Highlights include:

  • The Foundation received ratings higher than the typical funder, with several significant improvements since the 2018 survey — including our impact on local community and nonprofit organizations, our understanding of the fields in which our partners work, and our funder-grantee interactions. We believe this is due to our focus on trusted relationships, as we strive to keep our grantees at the heart of all we do.
  • Grantees overwhelmingly agree that the Foundation is committed to diversity, equity and inclusion and combatting racism, and encourage us to continue enhancing that commitment.
  • The majority of grantees also believe that the Foundation plays an important role in advocating for public policies that improve health. We recognize that advocacy is a powerful tool for systems change, and an essential component of our comprehensive approach to support grantee partners and advance the field.
  • All grantees rated the Foundation highly when it came to impact on grantees’ fields, communities and organizations, and the Foundation’s transparency and openness to grantees’ ideas. When we look closely at these responses, we see that ratings from organizations led by people who self-identify as people of color are still overwhelmingly positive, but are lower than ratings from white-led organizations. We take this feedback seriously and are exploring opportunities to ensure that all grantee partners have equally positive experiences with the Foundation.

Opportunities for improvement include ensuring that communications are consistent across all channels and continuing our ongoing efforts to streamline processes.

This input is sincerely appreciated. We continue to strive for transparency and continuous improvement in how we do our work and will incorporate grantee feedback in our annual and long-term strategic planning.
